Former top footballer Rafael van der Vaart reopened the Cruyff Court in his hometown. Cruyff Court Beverwijk was initially established in 2009 and, after years of intensive use, due for a refurbishment. The large field, located in the middle of a residential area, received a new artificial grass surface and a new name: Cruyff Court Rafael van der Vaart!
Rafael van der Vaart began his soccer career at De Kennemers in Beverwijk, and then played for AFC Ajax, Real Madrid, Hamburger SV, and the Dutch national team. With more than 100 caps for Oranje, he is one of the most well-known Dutch footballers of recent years. Therefore, he deserves his own Cruyff Court in the city where his football career began.
Rafael van der Vaart is proud!
"This field is really special to me. I grew up here in here and I also played soccer on this Cruyff Court with my son when he was little.I think we are missing real street footballers, and that's why I find this so wonderful. That kids just go outside and play football here. We hope that a new great talent will emerge from here. I am happy that I have come this far and proud that this field is named after me." Rafael commented.
Neighborhood sportscoaches and youth workers ensure activation and connection
The children of Beverwijk can enjoy the renovated Cruyff Court for years to come. The local organization, the Event Broker, already organizes many activities on this Court and will definitely continue to do so. This is very important because it is very welcome for children and young people to be extra encouraged to exercise and play. Besides being important for health, sports also contribute to personal development, self-confidence, and connection.
Robin Welp is a neighborhood sports coach, trained Cruyff Foundation Coach, and founder of the Event Broker; "Johan Cruyff already said it, playing outside should be a subject in school! I totally agree! They learn so much on this Cruyff Court!"
