Since 2008, Lidy has been an valuable volunteer at the Cruyff Foundation. Alongside a team of volunteers, she contributes to events, sports projects, and serves as a buddy for newcomers. In addition to her many memories, she has also had beautiful and personal moments with Johan Cruyff himself.
How it all began...
Lidy was inspired by the Cruyff Foundation after seeing a promotional video about wheelchair sports. "I found it very special," she says. Having played volleyball at a high level herself, she wanted to continue doing something in sports. "I got to help for the first time at the Cruyff Foundation Open Day, and I was sold immediately. The Open Day is an event at the Olympic Stadium where children with special needs can try out various sports. It was so special. I experienced for the first time the impact this has."
Johan's involvement
During her first eight years with the Foundation, Lidy had close interactions with Johan Cruyff. "Johan was often at the office and at events. I remember him as such a special man who always made time for a photo or signature with the children. He recognized everyone and was very involved. I admire how he used his fame for a good cause."
After Johan passed away, many volunteers remained involved with the Foundation. "Very few volunteers left after Johan's passing. That's very special; these volunteers truly do it for the Foundation!"
Duties and contributions
Lidy's duties are very diverse. "There are many different tasks, and that's what makes it so fun." Lidy is always present at events like the Cruyff Foundation Cup, Open Day, and Cooking Charity. She has also become the point of contact for volunteers within the Cruyff Foundation. "The group of volunteers consists of about 140 people and is very close-knit and fun. Every year, the Cruyff Foundation organizes a volunteer day to thank the active volunteers. Recently, we went skûtsjesilen in Friesland," says Lidy.
Being a volunteer at the Foundation
Volunteers get involved with the Cruyff Foundation in various ways, sometimes through connecting companies or because they know other volunteers. There are six to seven events annually, but the Open Day remains Lidy's favorite. "You get the complete experience. It's a beautiful mix of everything."
"When you see what is done for the children on such a day, you realize that many things do not come easily for them!" The Foundation's work helps her to put things into perspective, and she enjoys making a difference for children and parents in this way.
