Today, the Netherlands and Spain celebrated an important moment of historical connection during the state visit of King Felipe and Queen Letizia to the Netherlands. During a visit to Cruyff Court Betondorp, sport symbolized a unifying factor between the two countries, with a special focus on the legacy of Johan Cruyff.
As a Dutch-Spanish foundation, the Johan Cruyff Foundation had the honour of being involved by the Dutch royal family in the organization of this event. Representing the Cruyff family were Susila and Jordi Cruyff, along with ambassadors such as Frank Rijkaard and Guus Hiddink, to guide the event.
A sporting highlight of the Spanish state visit was the (sports) afternoon at Cruyff Court Betondorp, close to the birthplace of Johan Cruyff. This setting, along with the presence of the King of Spain where Cruyff brought his career to great heights, symbolized the deep-rooted bond between the Netherlands and Spain through sport.
Children from the neighbourhood came together to participate in various sports activities, including a football match where children took part for whom sports is not a given. For example, children with disabilities. This match, coached by ambassadors of the Cruyff Foundation and Their Majesties the Kings, embodied Cruyff’s belief that sport should be accessible to everyone.
Representing the Cruyff family, Susila (board member) and Jordi Cruyff were present to guide the event and encourage the children, along with ambassadors of the Cruyff Foundation, including Frank Rijkaard, Daphne Koster, Guus Hiddink, Tytjani Beztati, and Henk Norel.
Susila looks back with great pride on this special afternoon: "Today we have seen how sport unites not only children but also countries. My father's legacy reaches beyond borders, and the Cruyff Foundation will continue to give as many children as possible space to play sports and move. Sports promote mental and physical health, foster connections, friendships, self-confidence and a lot of fun "
